No such thing as too many. Everyone loves a good twist now and again.

It'd be great if they hadn't all decided to keep this one from me. I didn't even know my family was involved in something like this, and now it turns out Uncle Phillip was with you guys since around the time I was born.

That long? Wow. I didn't think the old guard were that ancient. But this isn't something you can really talk about.

My family's--[stops and sighs] Uncle Phillip left some records for whoever took over after him. Apparently my great-grandmother was doing this same kind of work. And then my grandfather, and then Uncle Phillip. And now me.

Oh man, a dynasty. Color me impressed. The only secret my family keeps is about the ingredients in a barbeque sauce. [Not true, but he sure looks sincere.] How goes the adjustment period?

Oh, that's nothing. This has been going on for way longer than I can even name the people involved.

It's fine, I guess. I mean, it's kind of nice having a real job where I don't have to hide my power for a change.

Still impressive.

That's it? That's the only perk? C'mon, most of us aren't that bad. And the things that try to kill us are interesting.

Yeah, well. We're an impressive family, apparently.

[He laughs, not that it's hard to make him laugh normally.] Well, I guess it'll be nice to have a file on the thing trying to kill me instead of stumbling around in the dark.

Uh. We at least have a record of it afterward. Maybe not always before, but that's partially why we keep you around, right? You're part thing is going to try and kill you now siren.

Thanks, that's encouraging. I guess I'm lucky my power works on most nonhumans too.

I'm thankful for it. Not that it's going to help me much, but I like you guys not dying every other week.

Uncle Phillip lasted plenty long, and it wasn't really the job that killed him.

Lucky him. But I have my doubts that everyone else can manage the same without some help.

Which is why I took the offer. This way I have help.

Oh c'mon. You just wanted to fight monsters. Admit it.

I'll admit that fighting monsters was part of the charm.

Trust me, every family has secrets. The ones who live more, have more, and you might be surprised by just how many that is.

I knew my family was old, but... I didn't realize how much they weren't telling me.

But you found out eventually, and now it's your secret to hide as well as theirs. Keeper of secrets, the new generation.

I guess that's one way of looking at it.

Well are any of them really suitable to tell the public? They wouldn't be secrets then and your family wouldn't have so many.

True.

Do I get to hear any of these secrets then, since I've been so helpful?

Unfortunately, no.

The satisfaction of having helped someone?

Aren't you just the cruelest little thing? Being all secretive and mysterious and then looking to stroll away.

I'm a horrible person, I know.

As many as mine? I wonder.

Good afternoon, David. How do you fare?

Jan. 14th, 2013 01:33 am (UTC)
As many as an angel's family--no, probably not. But plenty more than I realized.

Fine, mostly.

Are you fond of them, this new family?

Good.

[At some point David will stop being weirded out by having a casual conversation with an angel. Eventually.]

Well, they're still the only one I've got. And they're great, even if we never see each other.

[Bel's not holding his breath for that -- he's entirely used to people being slightly off with him,.]

I see my family little, also. I find that a little goes a long way, in terms of contact.

Maybe when you've got as much time as you do, but time is relative and all that.
